A summer day in Dubai

The girls and I (and our helper, Leah) decided to fit in one last fun day in the UAE before we head off on our summer travels and what a great day we had!  We started off at the Dubai Dolphinarium and then off to a great science museum that I didn't even know existed (and I tend to think of myself as relatively in the know when it comes to kids' stuff in the UAE!).

The dolphin show was a real highlight of the day.  The show itself was so amazing - we were right up front and could see everything (and got a little wet!).  The girls were all mesmerized by the dolphins and how high they could jump and how they could balance and throw balls.  The theater was only about 15% full so we had a very intimate show.  The best part was that Regan won the kids' contest and was able to be in the dolphin show.  All the kids who wanted to participate threw a soccer ball with a number on it into the pool.  The dolphin picked Regan's ball and she was able to take a boat ride pulled by a dolphin.  She waved the whole time (and got a stuffed animal).  It was so fun for her (and for us to see it!).  Meredith also participated but was a good sport about Regan winning.  Jane and Anna opted to sit that one out.

After the impressive dolphin show, we headed across Creek Park in Dubai to Children's City which is a  science museum operated by the emirate of Dubai.  It was great and is definitely worth a 1/2 day or even a full day stop.  It's a total bargain, too - only 10AED (or ~$2.70) to get in - a far cry from a lot of very expensive diversions you can find here.

Next stop was the Dubai Mall.  Poor Anna only has one pair of flip-flops that fit her and as we're heading to cold London tomorrow, she absolutely needed a new pair of shoes.  Dubai shopping is way, way better than Abu Dhabi so I postponed this purchase until today.  And score!  Two great pairs of shoes for 1/2 off at Osh Kosh.  We briefly stopped by to enjoy the fish at the aquarium, had a quick dinner and then made it home in time for bedtime.

One more busy day of packing but following up on a fun day like today, it won't feel like such a chore.

The girls and Leah riding a magic carpet (it really wiggled like
it was flying!) and you could see yourself on the screen
flying through the desert and other Middle Eastern sights.

Riding pretend (but wiggling and walking) camels
and horses.

In the exhibit where they learn about kids all around the world.  The kids
were very impressed that some cultures eat frog legs, ants and locusts!
They were particularly impressed to hear that their mother
has actually eaten frog legs!

There was an exhibit where you see which is faster - a touchpad or a dial
phone.  My girls were very confused by the concept of a dial phone!
