Bye, bye binky. Binky, bye, bye.

Our big piece of news as the school year starts is that we *finally* got rid of Anna's pacifier.  She is 3 1/2 so this was a long time comin'.  A little bit of history is that we planned to get rid of it on our way back from spring break.  We watched lots of Elmo's Bye Bye Binky song and talked about how when we came back from our trip, we would leave her binkies behind and she would be a big girl with no crib and no binky.  She had a special very worn blankie, creatively named "Blankie" and we would reassure her that we were saying good-bye to binky but not to Blankie.

Well, Blankie got lost in the Kathmandu airport.  It got dropped and I'm sure to the cleaning staff it looked like a filthy rag.  Jake gave it quite an effort by looking a little through some of the trashcans.  Unfortunately we had to cut our losses and say good-bye to Blankie.  Also, this was the very start of our trip so now we had nearly a week ahead of us with no Blankie and lots of new places, hotels and beds.  Needless to say, we decided it wasn't the time to say good-bye to binky...

We involved Anna in picking out a new lovey (she picked out a blue horse with a stuffed head but a blanket bottom) and named him Charley.  Charley has been a constant friend since April so we decided that once the jet lag was over from our summer travels, *then* it was time.

On Anna's first day of school as a Dragonfly at Bright Beginnings, we put her binkies under a special pillow.  While she was at school, the "Binky Fairy" came and brought her a balloon and a stuffed dog. She thinks the Binky Fairy came and took her binkies to our friends' new baby, Chloe.  Anna was quite pleased with the trade until bedtime came.  She had a tough time falling asleep (and no nap!) but eventually fell asleep and slept all night.  We're a few nights in and she's woken up twice and slept through the night twice but I think we're almost there.

Anna had a great attitude leaving all her binkies behind under
her special pillow.  She's a big kid now!
Below is a video of Anna finding what the binky fairy left for her.

Here is the Elmo video inspiration which helped Anna get comfortable with the whole topic of getting rid of the pacifier:
