Fun winter days

Here are a few snapshots of some of our winter activities - trying to take advantage of the wonderful weather!

A stroll on the beach (note all the women in abayas on the banana
boat in front of Anna)

Jake and Anna dug out some "relaxing chairs" in the sand

Playground time

Jane (in blue) and her soccer buddies (Brenli - red, Maya - yellow
and Sophie - green)

Making the chocolate house that Gammy and Poppy sent for Jane's birthday

Ok, Martha Stewart we aren't but looking good, we think!

Anna kept stealing the gum drops!  See, the evidence
is right here!

Meredith has started up piano lessons

The three big girls have started tennis lessons - it's right where we live
so the girls can ride their bikes there.  It feels very civilized
and suburban!

Regan on our mom and daughter adventurous eating date.
Regan ate seaweed salad, raw salmon, raw tuna
and unagi (eel!).  yay, Regan!

Enjoying park time

Jane's friend Summer has this new puppy.  Jane is ready to abandon
our family and move in with Summer!

We did it!  And I must confess that we ate every bite
of that chocolate house - took us a couple of weeks
but we have grit and didn't give up!  :-)

My friend Maggie and I went to a demonstration luncheon with
Chef Jason Black (from Hong Kong).  It was a wonderful,
wonderful event and we learned all about sous vide cooking
(ask me and I'll happily tell you all about it!)

Took the 3 big girls to see Cirque du Soleil in Dubai while Jake
and Anna had their daddy/ daughter date in Abu Dhabi.  We loved
the show!

Best buddies with matching missing teeth
Bicycle Day at Anna's school

Racer #5 getting her congratulations from Ms. Emma

Herding cats, I tell you!  This was the best of the bunch of about 10 attempts
but only 2 people are even looking at me!  Cute bunch of Dragonflies
after their bicycle ride.

We have a tomato!!!

Sister sandwich

This past weekend was the Qasr al Hosn festival which celebrates 250 years of Abu Dhabi history.  The first fort here (Qasr al Hosn) was built 250 years ago to protect a source of fresh water when hunters followed gazelles onto the island and saw them drinking fresh water.  The fort has also served as the royal family residence and the seat of government.  They're going through a big renovation and turning it into a museum/ heritage center.  This weekend is a festival unveiling some of the work (although it doesn't seem to be finished just yet).

As a part of the festival they also commissioned some former Cirque du Soleil person to write and choreograph a show celebrating the history of the fort.  We checked that out, too.  It had some acrobats, covered the desert, falconry, Arabian horses and pearl diving history and then highlighted the rapid changes since the 60s.  There was an elderly very long-bearded man doing a lot of live music with traditional instruments.  He was off to the side and it was dark so I wasn't able to get a picture of him but he was one of my favorite parts of the show.

Here are some old photos of the fort and below that a few shots of the show:
