One of the most appealing things about going overseas was thinking about the opportunities for our kids to see new places, see new and different cultures up close and go to school and make friends with people from all over the world. And happily, we can report that is definitely happening. Here is the class picture of Regan's 2nd grade class. She has friends from the U.S., Spain, Italy, Australia, Lebanon, Syria, Canada, Pakistan, the UAE and many other places. She has a lot of friends who don't have an easy answer to "Where are you from?" One was adopted from Vietnam by American parents and has lived in Abu Dhabi basically all of her life but they summer in Ireland so she mainly thinks she is "from" Ireland. Another friend has a Palestinian mom, a Lebanese dad, has lived in the U.S. but also has spent a lot of time and has a lot of family from Greece so she identifies with Greece as much as any place.
After I lost Jake's passport (in an earlier post), a few friends of mine had similar stories of lost passports - but many of their stories ended with, "...but he also had a British passport so was able to travel on that one" or "we just used our daughter's Hong Kong passport instead of her Canadian one for a while." I sometimes feel very boring for being just a regular 'ol American with only one passport!
